SONG OF THE WEEK: GOSSIP “Get A Job” [Numero 57]
Cinquantasettesimo ”numero” della mia nuova rubrica SONG OF THE WEEK, consigli personali sui nuovi pezzi che ritengo interessanti o,quanto meno,degni di nota rispetto ad altri nel mondo del mainstream musicale. Non tutto il commerciale è da buttare,e spero che con questa rubrica lo possa dimostrare.

Per questa settimana ho scelto “Get a Job”, nuovo singolo dei Gossip, band capitanata dalla rotonda ma fierissima Beth Ditto.
Maggiormente conosciuti al pubblico italiano per il brano “Heavy Cross”, che mostra un sound accattivante ed una voce corposa, grintosa e provocante della Ditto, questa “Get a Job” è il singolo più “forte” pubblicato da allora, per quanto mi riguarda, e mi ha subito colpito.
Video molto divertente, dove Beth mostra la sua grande autoironia e sfrontatezza, e testo che fa leva proprio su un argomento alquanto sentito in tutto il mondo “la ricerca di un lavoro” che spesso è portata sia da una mancanza effettiva di posti ma spesso anche dalla prigrizia e dalla rassegnazione a non trovare nulla.
C’è però chi è abituato anche troppo bene dalla propria famiglia e, lasciando passare gli anni, si arriva a quasi 30 anni senza che essa/o abbia nessun tipo di entrata, progetto personale o modo per crearsi delle entrate che siano solo proprie.
Una stoccata per nulla velata contro le “povere ragazze ricche”, che spendono troppo tempo con la permanente e poco a crearsi un futuro degno di questo nome.
Il singolo è stato reso disponibile gia’ mesi fa ma solo negli ultimi giorni è stato proprio ufficializzato, proprio con l’uscita del videoclip ufficiale.
Il pezzo è inserito nel loro quinto disco di studio “A Joyful Noise” (#100 USA; #47 UK #1 SWI; #2 GER; #3 FRA; #4 AUS #8 BEL). Il disco è stato specialmente un successo in Francia, dove ha venduto oltre 70,000 copie.

This week i’ve chosen “Get a Job”,new single from the Gossip, band led by chubby but super strong and fierce Beth Ditto.
Mostly known for their hit single “Heavy Cross”, which shows off a rock pop powerful sound and a wonderful and stunning voice from the lead member, this “Get A Job” is the strongest single since their aforementioned hit, and i immediately appreciate it.

The official video is very funny, and Beth demonstrates autoirony and cockiness, with lyrics that deals with a very important topic at the moment all over the world, the quest for a job. Often this “pursuit” is obstacled by the real lack of places to offer but, in some other cases, is just a cause of lazyness.
“Get a Job” hits here, where the lazyness lays. Who’s used to play safe and sound, with shoulders covered by relatives and family, let year pass by without thinking at nothing but their hair and everything similar, without a personal plan for the future, a way to create its own money and be self dependent, or at least trying to.
This is an unapologetic assault to that “poor little rich girls” that spends money without generating anything, even pushing 30s.
The single was released months ago but just in the last days has been published for good, corresponding with the release of the accompaining videoclip.
“Get A Job” is included in their fifth studio album “A Joyful Noise” (#100 USA; #47 UK #1 SWI; #2 GER; #3 FRA; #4 AUS #8 BEL). The album has been received particularly well in France, where more than 70,000 copies have been sold.
