SONG OF THE WEEK : ELLA HENDERSON “Ghost” [Numero 114]

Per questa settimana , ho scelto “Ghost” il singolo di debutto dell’artista inglese Ella Henderson , 6a classificata nella 9a edizione di X FACTOR UK , che anticipa il suo disco “Chapter One”, in uscita il 22 Settembre.

“Ghost” è un brano power pop che parla di presenze/assenze, dolori e fantasmi di quei dolori , con un tono quasi dark per quanto sempre e comunque pop, ma di classe.

C’è un po’ di Leona Lewis, un po’ di Adele e sicuramente tanta bravura , sia come songwriter ( tutto il disco è composto da lei, e certi brani INTERAMENTE da lei) che come voce e questo dimostra che chi non vince un talent, se in gamba, può andare ugualmente lontano.

Il singolo è un successo , #1 in UK per 2 settimane e in pochi giorni ha già superato le 400,000 copie vendute ed è attualmente in top 10 e sta anche affacciandosi sul resto del mercato discografico europeo.

For this week i’ve chosen  “Ghost” , the debut single from UK artist Ella Henderson , 6th classified from X FACTOR UK 9 , which previews her debut album “Chapter One”, to be released September 22 , 2014.

“Ghost” is a power pop song that deals with presences/absences, pain and phantoms of that painful feelings, with a dark tone but with a very pop package, a very classy pop package.

There’s a bit of Leona Lewis, a lot of Adele and certainly a lot of artistry , as songwriter ( all the album has been co-composed by her , with some songs to be completely written by her ) and her voice demonstrates that who doesn’t win a competition can dream and get a chance anyway.

“Ghost” is a success , UK #1 for 2 weeks and more than 400,000 copies sold till now and it’s still in the top 10 and is now reaching heights in other european countries.

SONG OF THE WEEK : JENNIFER LOPEZ “Same Girl” [Numero 92]

Novantaduesimo ”numero” della mia nuova rubrica SONG OF THE WEEK, consigli personali sui nuovi pezzi che ritengo interessanti o,quanto meno,degni di nota rispetto ad altri nel mondo del mainstream musicale. Non tutto il commerciale è da buttare,e spero che con questa rubrica lo possa dimostrare.

Per questa settimana ho scelto “Same Girl” , il  primo singolo estratto dall’imminente ottavo album di studio di Jennifer Lopez, ancora senza un nome.

Il pezzo, composto da Chris Brown e prodotta dallo storico produttore di J.Lo , il carissimo Cory Rooney , non è sicuramente “On the Floor” o una dance latin track come “Papi”, che rimane al primo ascolto, ma riporta alle atmosfera di fine anni 90 inizio anni 2000, dei suoi primi 3 album “On the 6” , “J.Lo” e “This Is Me Then” ( nella fattispecie sembra un pezzo uscito da quest’ultimo lp) e si ricollega al tema che lanciò anni fa in uno dei suoi singoli-firma , “Jenny From the Block”.

Il brano è stato descritto dalla Lopez come regalo ai fan della prima ora, un po’ traditi da anni per il change della Lopez dal pop/r’n’b alla (latin) dance negli ultimi anni e del recente singolo ( quella “Live it Up” che , per inciso, non si è cagato nessuno).

A mio avviso il pezzo è molto più gradevole degli ultimi club banger che ha prodotto ( ad eccezione di “On the Floor”, che è davvero una pop gem ) e può essere un buon singolo promozionale , sperando che il nuovo album ci regali atmosfere più variegate , come Jennifer sapeva fare anni fa , ma che si è persa, specialmente nell’ultimo lp “Love?” , non cosi malvagio ma di certo non memorabile.

Nel video, girato per le strade del Bronx, troviamo J-Lo che passeggia, canta e saluta gente un po’ come succedeva 12 anni fa , in  “Jenny from the Block”, di cui “Same Girl” può essere considerata la versione 2014 , per i nuovi fans e la nuova generazione ( anche se ci tengo a precisare che il pezzo del 2002 è imbattibile in quanto a fascino e ritmo ).

For this week i’ve chosen “Same Girl” , first single taken from the forthcoming ,eight , studio (yet untitled) album of the pop latin singer Jennifer Lopez.

The song , written by Chris Brown and produced by long time producer Cory Rooney , it’s certainly no “On the Floor” or adance latin  like “Papi”, so catchy that hooks on you at the first listen ,but is a pretty good song that makes us immediately thinking about end of 90s and beginning of the 200s , the years of the Jennifer’s best album (her first three) “On the 6” , “J.Lo” e “This Is Me Then” ( “Same Girl” seems a song taken from the latter ) and connects clearly to one of her signature songs , “Jenny From the Block”.

The tune has been described by Lopez as a gift to fans, maybe in particular for those who feel betrayed by Lopez changing roots to r’n’b-pop to the (latin) dance of the last years , like her most recent single too ( that “Live it Up” that nobody cared about, for instance ).

To me “Same Girl” is way better than same of her last ( defined ) club bangers ( apart from “On the Floor”, a real pop gem ) and could be a really good promotional single for her new record , hoping that it will be more vary , unlike her previous albums, in particular for the latest “Love?” , not so bad but not that good too.

In the videoclip , J. Lo greets, sings, walks and breaths the air of the roads of the Bronx air , like she did for “Jenny from the Block” more or less , of whom “Same Girl” could be the 2014 version for new generation fans  ( even if “Jenny From the Block” is , as of now, still one of her best songs and is still a long shot better than “Same Girl” ).

SONG OF THE WEEK : NINA NESBITT “Way in the World” [Numero 81]

Per questa settimana ho scelto “Way In The World” , quarto singolo mainstream ufficiale della 19enne cantante pop rock Nina Nesbitt .

Bionda e armata di ritornelli piacevoli e ben costruiti , come le più riuscite pop songs di Taylor Swift , Nina ha all’attivo 5 EP pubblicati tra fine 2011 ad oggi.

Il pezzo è stato pubblicato a Giugno  ma lo propongo ora perché il pezzo non ha fatto il giro dell’Europa e , a mio avviso, merita di esser conosciuto ed ascoltato.

Sicuramente ha una vibe perfetta per l’estate, quindi la pubblicazione a Giugno era perfetta, ma funziona ovviamente anche in altri periodi. Una buona canzone funziona sempre.

Cercare sé stessi senza l’ansia di mille paranoie ma ammettendo con sé stessi di essere nel percorso più normale e godibile di tutti : il viaggio della vita. La fine dell’adolescenza che ti mette davanti a quell’insicurezza costante e quella sensazione di non sapere cosa fare del proprio futuro fragile ma in realtà più ricco di sorprese che si possa immaginare. Una canzone positiva e non cosi stupida , una volta tanto.

Il singolo ha raggiunto in UK la posizione #55 , mentre il suo singolo più fortunato è stato “Stay Out” che ha raggiunto il #21 , sempre in UK, ad inizio 2013.

This week i’ve chosen “”Way In The World” , fourth mainstream single from 19 year old singer songwriter Nina Nesbitt .

Blonde , sweet , and guitar as a weapon, Nina has a fresh sound , like a pop-pish version of Taylor Swift . Nina has 5 EPs released between the end of 2011 to now and “Way Of The World” was released in June.

Even if released some months ago i suggest the song because is almost new for many music markets and , even if very summery, i think it could work out well in your ipod every season and it deserves to be heard.

Looking for ourselves and the anxiety of everyday problems , admitting to be “just finding” and not “being lost” , being in the making , in the wonderful journey of life. The end of innocence that puts you before the constant insecurities and that feeling of having a frail destiny , all in our hands , misleading us to think that all is bigger and overwhelming , a lot more than it seems. A positive song, and we really got a few in this world , and this is “with a heart”.

A happy and very pleasant tune , that peaked at number 55 in UK while her previous single, best selling so far, “Stay Out” reached number 21.
